When it rains, it pours! And lately, it has been raining a lot in Texas and across the country. We’ve been experiencing weeks of rain showers, thunderstorms, hail, flooding, rain-wrapped tornadoes and in the midst of it all, some of the most beautiful rainbows.

Ironically, I feel as though I have experienced each of those weather occurrences in my life, not just for the past few weeks, but the past 12 months. For me, this stormy weather represents overwhelming change in my life. Some predicted, some unexpected! Either way, a season of change has been moving across the radar of my life from career to the very personal. And in each passing storm, I’ve had to make a choice of not only how was I going to react, but what I would do.

Today is the National Day of Prayer. The theme this year is “Lord, Hear Our Cry,” emphasizing the need for individuals, corporately and individually, to place their faith in the unfailing character of their Creator.

“Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence this day.” – Kings 8:28

Ironically, this theme and this scripture have been at the center of my life and daily prayers and I didn’t fully realize it until recently.

Prayer is a powerful thing! And when grounded in faith, it can be life changing!

In the spirit of Women’s History Month, let’s embrace our womanhood and all the “secret sauce” ingredients that come with it. Let’s defy the status quo and break the boundaries!

Let’s celebrate the true essence of what it’s like to be #LikeAWoman in an often male dominated and gender biased world. This month, instead of trying to be like a man to get ahead, let’s represent #LikeAWoman – Think like One, Act Like One!

Hugs and kisses from me to you because this month is all about love! However, I would like for us to take a minute to consider another word that has a starring role in love; a word that if we are honest, we tend not to talk about or avoid like the plague. It is a side of ourselves that we keep hidden and protected. That word is “vulnerable”.

In order to love ourselves, to love others and to allow ourselves to be loved in return, we must be willing to be vulnerable. To be vulnerable by definition, means to open ourselves up to the possibility of being physically or emotionally wounded; to be open to moral attack, criticism, temptation and more. Simply put, to be easily hurt.

Each new year brings new beginnings and, for me, it brings a new life theme. I was inspired to share my approach to using themes as opposed to resolutions by two people dear to me who started out as PR colleagues, but over the years, have grown into friends that I respect, love and admire.

I stopped making resolutions several years ago because, like most of us, I didn’t keep them or stressed out so much over them (because I am results-driven – a side effect of professional life) that after the first month I felt like a failure. The problem was the resolutions were so metric-driven and so specific that they felt like a “to-do” list that I was checking off or that kept stacking up as I fell farther behind. You know, things like work out five times a week for 30 minutes in the morning or write down three things that I am grateful for each day.

“Success means having the courage, the determination and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be.” – George Sheehan

Recently, a dear sweet friend of mine and I were having an open and vulnerable conversation about the importance of not only accepting who you are, the good and the bad, but having the courage and the confidence to be true to who you are meant to be.

My friend was venting about how she was tired of not being accepted for the characteristics that make her uniquely her, like her loudness and infectious laugh. She felt people sometimes judged her because she does not whisper and sometimes breaks the invisible sound barrier that others can inflict upon us. Notice I said “us”. That’s because I know those judgmental and annoyed looks (you do too!) all to well, because I, too, am a person whose voice tends to rise and break invisible sound barriers when I am passionate about a subject. Is that wrong? Is it a crime? Should we be made to wear the scarlet L (for “loud”) for it? I think not. I think we should be celebrated for being passionate!

November is the month where we give thanks and express gratitude, especially at Thanksgiving. It is during this time that many of us slow down for half a second from our busy lives, important careers and daily worries to voice what we are thankful for. We say things like, “I am grateful for my family, my home, my job, my kids, my car, etc.”

Recent NFL headlines regarding domestic abuse has made me pause and think not only about domestic violence, but more importantly about the emotional and mental abuse that many of us suffer in some form or fashion in our relationships.

It took me back to my own separation and divorce, a very dark and lonely time in my life. While I am not a victim of domestic abuse, I have experienced a form of emotional and mental abuse that changed me from the person I had always been to someone I didn’t even know. Someone I couldn’t even recognize and I didn’t have a mark or scar on me.

The best accessory a woman can have? Her smile! There are countless reasons why, but Bob Marley once said, “The most beautiful curve on a woman’s body is her smile.” And as a woman with a lot of curves, I like to think that is true. In my eyes, it’s my best asset and I never get dressed without it.

I give smiles freely daily, starting with myself. That’s right, I smile at myself in the mirror everyday while I’m getting dressed. Some might think that it’s vain or odd, but I say if you can’t make yourself smile then how on earth can you make someone else?
